California Wine Country

California is home to big, established and very famous wineries and small, new and lesser known vineyards alike. Some of the more popular chateaus in the whole of California and the world are the Robert Mondavi winery, Domaine Chandon, Niebaum-Coppola Estate winery, Beaulieu Vineyards and Beringer Vineyards. These are the historic wineries that have brought international attention to California as a wine country.

Robert Mondavi is considered to be the father of California wine. His winery is one of the most renowned in the world. It was founded in 1966 when Mondavi used novel techniques in winemaking to produce high quality wines. Since then, the chateau has garnered worldwide interest in Napa Valley.

At present, Domain Chandon is renowned for its premium sparkling wines. In the 1970s. Moet and Chandon, a great champagne house from France, decided to start making sparkling wines in Napa Valley using the French traditional techniques. Domain Chandon was instituted and it produced its first vintage wine in 1976. Today, the winery is famous not just for its sparkling wines but its majestic landscaped grounds and architecture.

The Niebaum-Coppola Estate Winery is probably the most scenic vineyard in California, thus it is very popular and busy. It was previously owned by Gustave Nebium but the whole estate was purchased by Francis Ford Coppola, the famous director of The Godfather. He restored the historic chateau and made it into the spectacular winery it is today. The winery produces a variety of products, of which the Rubicon series epitomizes the highest quality in winemaking.

The Beaulieu Vineyards is one of the oldest wineries in California. It was founded in 1900 by Frenchman George de Latour. The winery is well-known for its fine reserve wines, especially the George de Latour Cabernet Sauvignon. BV also invented novel techniques in winemaking.

Beringer Vineyards is the oldest operational winery in the Napa Valley. It was founded in 1897 and is a classic German style estate.

There are several budding Napa Valley wine producers awaiting their hit in the winemaking business. California has been for a long time, and hopefully forever will be, a prolific wine country producing some of the best in the world.

Fermenting Fortitude- The Magic of Red Wine

Whenever most of us think of endurance, we think of a variety of things. We think of an athlete crossing the finish line after a ten mile run. We imagine mountain climbers sopped in sweat reaching the apex of a steep grade. We think of lung capacity, we think of willpower and we think, with a bit of envy, of the Energizer Bunny. When it comes to endurance, we think of all sorts of things, but wine isnt usually one of them. Drinking paper cups of Chianti during a race seems pointless, crossing the finish line and immediately chugging a glass of Shiraz seems weird, and pouring a bottle of Merlot over yourself in a celebratory shower seems downright ridiculous: that stuff will stain your workout clothes.

Despite the fact we might not equate endurance and wine - or really wine and athletics - recent studies are proving there may be a strong relation between a red wine compound and your bodys ability to produce energy.

Now Gatorade, dont worry. PowerAde, stop pouting. All Sport, be a sport: red wine is not out to take your jobs, its simply out to prove that endurance can be found at the bottom of all sorts of bottles, not just the ones designed as sports drinks.

In November of 2006, Johan Auwerx - a researcher at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cell Biology in France - published an article based on proof that reservatrol, a natural compound found in red wine, could help improve endurance in mice. He and his coworkers proved this by putting groups of mice on a variety of diets and noting the results.

One group of mice was placed on a regular diet, one group was placed on a diet high in fat, and one group was placed on a diet high in fat and high in reservatrol. After three weeks, the mice on the diet high in fat weighed 60 percent more than the mice on the regular diet, but the mice on the diet high in fat and high in reservatrol weighed only 20 percent more than the mice on the regular diet. The mice who were taking reservatrol gained 40 percent less weight. These mice also portrayed better fitness levels: they were able to run twice as long as the mice who were not given the compound (even after the weight gains were taken into account).

Whether this will work the same way in humans is still the root of much speculation. To begin, the mice were given so much reservatrol that a human, in order to receive the same amount, would have to consume nearly 100 glasses of red wine in a 24 hour period. Though some people might think this a great idea, most would probably find such excess only results in the worlds biggest hangover or - as Gatorade likes to call it - job security.

Reservatrol is believed to help endurance because it jumpstarts the bodys mitochondria, which provide cells with energy. When the body consumes reservatrol in large amounts, the passage that provides cells with more mitochondria is activated, and the body is suddenly consumed with much larger amounts of energy. This also leads to an enhanced metabolism and an ability to burn fat at an increased rate.

Reservatrol doesnt just help increase endurance on a muscular level: it also adds to the greatest endurance of all: an increased lifespan. Known as a compound that can literally slow down the aging process, reservatrol is a multi-talented chemical. Like the overachiever we all hated in high school, reservatrol is the class president/cheerleading captain/teachers pet/scholarship winner of the chemical world.

As of now, the future influence reservatrol will have on endurance is very much up in the air. We only know that the above findings have opened doors to many possibilities. Drinking just a glass or two of red wine a day wont suddenly give you the ability to be like Mike, but this discovery could lead to athletes one day taking reservatrol supplements. It could even open the door to a sports drink meets wine conglomerate: as bottles of red wine get infused with more reservatrol to become Graperade, a fitness drink for the next generation, known for reeling in athletes with the tagline, Wine is just win with an e.

The Relationship Of Wine And Food

The relationship between wine and food goes back a long way and there are long standing traditions governing the pairing of certain wines with certain foods. This proper combination of the appropriate wine with a delicious meal results in an enjoyable experience by all who are participating in the event. By choosing the correct wine the taste of the meal can be enhanced greatly and the same is true of the correct dish being served along with the wine. It is not necessary to spend lavish amounts of money at some exclusive restaurant to achieve satisfaction; you can have the experience in your own home.

The rules for pairing certain wines with certain foods goes back to the 1800s when French chefs were traveling throughout Europe and sharing their opinions on what wine should be drank with a certain meal. This is where the basis for serving white wines with seafood comes from and that of serving red wines with red meat and wild game. Sometimes in modern times these rules have been bent or broken due to more availability of a greater variety of wines.

The key to the proper harmony of wine with a meal is to always take care that the wine and the meal compliment one another and not compete with each other, for example serving a premium wine with a more average meal instead of trying to combine the best wine and the best meal all at the same time. Another key point is to serve regional wines with their equivalent local dishes, for example certain Spanish dishes are best served with a Spanish wine from the region the food originates from.

To help you make the right choices in matching the appropriate wine to a meal bear these things in mind:

Always consider the richness of both and choose a heavier full bodied red wine in most cases for a rich red meat or wild game meal. There are some white wines that could be appropriate as a matter of personal taste.

Never serve a dry wine with dessert, always choose a wine that is at least as sweet as the confectionary delight being served.

Wines that are higher in tannins should served with high protein meals which mix with the tannins and lessen the tannin taste. If you attempt to serve a high tannin wine with fish or other seafood they will sometimes give an unpleasant metallic taste or even taste bitter with salty dishes.

So keep the old rules in mind when making your choices but also remember that they can be bent a little in consideration of an exceptional wine or rare meal.

Explore The World Of Wine - Take A World Wide Wine Tour

Explore The World Of Wine:

Wine is a drink that has been enjoyed by humans for thousands of years. Recent archaeological finds have now even found wine dating back to almost 5,000 years in China. There are several different basic types of wine. The most basic breakdown is red wine and white wine. When the grapes that make these varieties of wine are combined, a rose or blush wine can be created. If the wine is allowed to ferment in a way that produces carbon dioxide bubbles, it becomes a sparkling wine.

If the sparkling wine comes from a particular region in France called Champagne, it is known as Champagne. There are also fortified wines - these wines are also fermented from grapes, but additional amounts of alcohol from other sources are added to the wine to raise its alcohol content. An example of a fortified wine is brandy.

Health Benefits Of Drinking Wine:

Research programs on other factors in wine have resulted in several studies in the past few years on the antioxidant and protective effects of wine compounds. Several compounds in wine inhibit platelet aggregation and act as antioxidants to prevent the breakdown of LDL cholesterol into atherosclerotic plaque. One in vitro study even found that these compounds were more effective than vitamin E in inhibiting LDL oxidation.

Since 1991 over three dozen studies have provided preliminary evidence that wine have positive health effects. However, as most of this research comes from animal studies, it has not yet been demonstrated that this is applicable to humans.

Red Wine Benefits - Improve Your Health

Red wine is general good for you, but it is important to know the specifics of these benefits because you can then employ them to serve your body better. Over 600 million gallons of red wine is consumed in US and the numbers keep growing. The presence of flavanoids called Resveratrol in red wine is responsible for the health benefits.

Red Wine Benefits

There are many benefits of red wine. It has been shown to help prevent heart disease, when drunk in moderation. In fact, studies have actually shown that one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men reduces the risk of heart attack for people in middle age by 30-50 percent, which is a quite impressive. There are also many other red wine benefits, such as the fact that it has been proven to help lower bad cholesterol in the body. Lower cholesterol level reduces the risk of blood clots forming and blood vessel damage being caused as a result of fat deposits.

Red wine also contains anti-aging property which helps to keep your arteries healthy and aids in boosting the immune system. Some people even claim that red wine can play a role in preventing cancer. The Bordeaux region of France produces Cabernets and also some fine Merlots. California is known for quality Cabernets, Merlots, and Zinfandels which are grown in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Oregon and Washington are also making their mark with wonderful Pinots and Merlots.

Only drink red wine in moderation, because drinking too much just because you have heard that it is good for you can be bad for your body. By drinking too much wine you are going to be putting yourself at more danger than before for conditions like obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol, stroke, cardiac arrhythmia.

Plenty of research and studies have shown us that the red wine benefits are plentiful, but it is also important to realize that you have to maintain an otherwise healthy lifestyle at the same time. To get the benefits of something such as wine, then you should also be consuming a healthy, well-balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and getting lots of regular exercise. When your body is in generally healthy shape overall, then and only then will it really be able to prosper from the red wine benefits that are so touted today.

Now that you know the benefits of drinking red wines, quickly run to the nearby wine shop or better yet shop the fine wine shops online. To serve red wine, let it get to about 66 degrees Fahrenheit. Open it at least 30 minutes before serving to let it \”breathe\”. This will help to release pent up gases and add flavor to the wine. While waiting for the wine to breathe get that favorite dish you like prepared, take off your shoes, sit down and relax and enjoy your meal. While you sip your favorite red wine imagine all the benefits and then thank your lucky stars.

Summerhill Winery (Kelowna)

At Summerhill, tradition meets the mystical to create a winery experience that is somewhat out of the ordinary. Visitors may try some of Summerhills many wines in the wine shop before heading out on one of the many tours that are conducted throughout the day. The winery also features Sunset Bistro, a restaurant at the winerys front with an ample patio and view of Okanagan Lake. Before entering the winery, visitors can also take in the World Peace Park with a waterfall, lovely vista, and koi pond to boot.

Immediately upon entering Summerhills grounds, visitors will notice a white concrete pyramid. This is the jewel in the winerys crown and the place where many of Summerhills wines are aged. It is thought that the aging of good wines in the sacred geometry of the pyramid has a positive, flavour-enhancing affect on them (tastings conducted in the pyramid revealed that 9 of 10 tasters preferred pyramid-aged wines).

During the tour of the cellar, which somewhat resembled a sance, we were informed that the pyramid could also strengthen ones life-force. At the very least, the carefully constructed building keeps the wines at a cool temperature (11-15 C) and provides welcome relief from the hot Okanagan sun outside.

Wines:

Summerhill derives its grapes from 45 acres of organic vineyard as well as from growers up and down the valley. The winery gained early attention for its sparkling wines, particularly the Cipes Brut, which has won awards internationally against sparkling wines from Champagne. The winery tour includes an explanation of the sparkling wine vinification process. There are several lines of Summerhill wines, including Pyramid wines, Star Galaxy, Summerhill Organic, Enchanted Vines (featuring folklore artwork and organic grapes) and Summerhill Estate.

Summerhill currently produces an array of wines too wide to list in its entirety. We have included a selection of some of its best-sellers:

Cipes Brut N/V
\r Pyramid Ehrenfelser (quite popular according to tasting staff)
\r Pyramid Gewrztraminer
\r Pyramid Cabernet Franc
\r Organic Pinot Blanc
\r Organic Gewrztraminer
\r Late Harvest Riesling
\r Riesling Icewine

Notes on Tastings:

Summerhill has a well-equipped tasting room with a long tasting bar. Some staff members are fluent in Cantonese or Mandarin. The winery is often very busy in the summer, sometimes with several tour busses passing through at a time. Up to four wines can be tasted free of charge.

Last Word:

Did we feel the Pyramids energy?- Perhaps. We recommend that you visit this winery and see for yourself.

Is Wine Really Good for you?

It seems too good to be true. Something which you enjoy and which gives you so much pleasure can actually be GOOD for you?

Actually, up till the 18th century A.D., wine was a major factor in the practice of medicine. Its medical benefits have been known since the Greek physician Hippocrates in the 6th century B.C. It was really only after the rise of the temperance movement in Victorian times that all alcohol, including wine, started to be seen as evil. In some quarters, it still is.

But then people became aware of the French Paradox. The French eat huge amounts of saturated fats, smoke heavily, and exercise hardly at all. Likewise the Americans. Yet the occurrence of heart disease among the French is less than one-third that among Americans. Why the difference?

It has to be wine. The French consume wine on a moderate and regular basis. Especially red wine. Until recently, the American tipple was much more likely to be beer.

Note the words moderate and regular. A consumption of 3-4 glasses of wine a day for men and 1-2 for women (preferably red) could cut your risk of cardiovascular disease by up to 50 percent. The risk is higher both for heavy or binge drinkers AND for total abstainers! This is because the flavonoids in wine, especially red wine, function as anti-oxidants.

As well as the flavonoids, there is another element called resveratrol. This has been shown to:
\r boost the immune system;
\r block the formation of cancer cells;
\r block a specific protein that helps to cause cardio-fibrosis;
\r prevent or postpone Alzheimers and other degenerative processes in the brain;
\r (possibly) help avoid the risk of stomach ulcers, stroke, and colorectal tumors.

So if wine is such a wonder-drug, shouldnt we all be knocking it back?

Well, no, there are some people who, sadly, do need to avoid it. If you have stomach ulcers, liver disease, pancreatitis, a urinary infection, or epilepsy, you should not drink wine AT ALL. Also, some people with a tendency to asthma could react adversely to the sulfites in wine.

If you are on other medications, ask your physician. Some medications combine adversely with alcohol, others dont.

And DONT use wine as an anti-depressant or a stress-buster! Youll feel a hundred times worse once the effect wears off.

Lots of medical papers have been written on the benefits of wine. Most of them dont mention the biggest benefit of all it makes you feel good! Wine is one of the great pleasures of life. Dont think of it as a medicine just relax and enjoy it!

Your Best Wine Tour of California Napa Valley Wineries!

Dont Get Drunk.

Its called wine tasting, which means you have to pace yourself. Drink too much, and you wont appreciate the delicate flavors (you may not even be able to remember your name!). See the tour as a way of educating your palate-if youre just after the alcohol, stay home and drink a couple of six packs.

Drink Lots of Water.

Most of us dont drink wine for several hours a day. So, your body may be a little shocked by the alcohol intake, and you could wake up with a bad headache or an upset stomach. To avoid this, drink plenty of water between wine tastings. This will help you flush the alcohol out of your system.

Use the Dump Buckets.

You dont have to swallow everything. You can just taste the wine and then spit it out, especially if you dont really like it.

Keep a Wine Journal.

Itll be hard to remember all the names and qualities of all the wine you tasted. So, bring a note book and list your favorite vineyards, varietals and vintages that you really, really loved.

Go Beyond the Wine.

Yes, its a wine tour, but there are other things you can do in and around Napa Valley wineries. Explore the beautiful grounds and gardens. Enjoy the breeze, the golden California sun, and the peace of acres and acres of landscape unbroken by skyscrapers or neon lights.

Understand the Story Behind the Flavor.

For a truly well-rounded understanding of the science and art of winemaking, choose tours that include a lesson on the different types of grapes, the procedures for harvesting, and the different processes involved in bringing it from field to table.

Rest.

Since most Napa wineries open at about 10 am or beyond, wine tours dont have the frenetic pace of most vacations. You can sleep in without guilt, or enjoy a leisurely breakfast instead of having to rush to catch the first bus. The same goes for the lack of night life, too. There arent any bars or discos here, but at least you can really recharge at the end of your tour. (Bring a good book!)

Enjoy the Food!

This is a good time to develop your culinary horizonsespecially when traveling in the heart of Napa Valley. Take advantage of the numerous gourmet restaurants in the area, and order dishes you normally wouldve refused. For more convenience, book your reservations even before you leave home. You dont waste precious time waiting for a table, and you can also research on the reviews of different places.

Stay in a Bed and Breakfast.

Some wineries will have in-house accommodations. But, you can also stay in a bed and breakfast in Napa or neighboring Sonoma Valleys. The homey, serene atmosphere will give you a taste of the local culture.

Wine Food Pairing - The Cows Go Up And The Cows Come Down!

Wine Food Pairing in the Alps what, could be more of an adventure? Every autumn, usually in September or October the cows in the Alpine regions of Europe make the annual trek down the mountainside after a summer of feasting on sweet, tender grass on the mountain tops. This fattens up the cows for a winter season of \”hopefully\” bountiful milk and cheese producing.

This event is called Almabtrieb in German and is looked forward to as terrific time to celebrate with music, beer, wine and local food! Large tents are set up and locals as well as the tourists watch as the shepherds dressed in their traditional garb of lederhosen (rhymes with lair-de-hose-in) lead their bovine wards down the mountains through the streets of the village.

The shepherds in their short leather breeches are not the only ones dressed up for the occasion. The night before they are led down the mountain, the cows are all decked out in flowered harnesses, ribbons and bells. It is quite a sight to see and hear!

Did I hear you ask about the motor traffic during this event? Nothing moves very fast on the day that the cows come down! If you are in your car and are going the same way, it is almost impossible if you are lucky enough to be able to pass the parade you will find yourself moving along eye to eye with one of these colorful flowered beasts .. and you pray to make it around the herd before it decides to move back across the road.

The best case scenario is to find the Beer tent and kick back to enjoy the celebration! For myself, I enjoyed a liter of the local red wine along with a cheese sausage or kase grinder. Teamed up with a fresh roll it made a hearty snack! Of course all of these local kitchens cook up a mean schnitzel, which is a breaded meat cutlet.this cutlet can be any type of meat from veal to pork or turkey. I like the hearty red wines to pair with these also, but many find that they cant do without their traditional beer!

If you would like to have a more personal interest in the events it is possible to rent a cow. Yes, rent a cow! In Switzerland, some of the farmers have come up with a program to rent a cow for the summer. Renting a cow comes with privileges. You will get laminated photo of your Bessie along with her name .. you can even visit your bovine up in the Alps.. and, the farmer will sell you cheese at a discounted price. For additional fees, if you arrive by 5:00am, you can have the special honor of milking your beast.

This cow rental contract, yes, you know the Swiss are very precise people, also allows you to join the procession down the mountain during the Almabtrieb. Pretty cool, huh? Im not sure about availability, but I would book far in advance!

I found this whole celebration a delightful experience.good food, wine and entertainment galore.and you should see the cows!

This, my friends, is Wine Food Pairing at its finest! CHEERS!

Pairing Food and Wine is a Matter of Taste
First off let me say that I am in no way a wine snob. I do not believe that there is an ultimate right and wrong way to pair wine with food. It all boils down to your personal taste and the tastes of your guests. Most people like to pair white wines with white meats and lighter meals like fish, and red wines with red meats and pastas. You can certainly mix it up, however. Experiment and go with what you think tastes good. That being said, some peo...
